 browser security certificates

Error:

Internet Explorer
"Certificate has expired . . .continue loading this page?"

Netscape Navigator/Communicator
"Certificate Authority is expired . . .you may continue or cancel this connection"

Problem:

This error may results because of one or more expired site certificates in your browser. Some older Macintosh and PC versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator/Communicator may receive this error when browsing to secure web sites (SSL). Secure web sites are commonly used for online banking and when making online purchases.

When certificates are handed over to your browser from a Certificate Authority (CA), these certificates are given an expiration date. Many older browsers' certificates have been set to expire on Dec.31, 1999 at 12:00am. This is not a Y2K related problem nor is it related to your Earthlink connection to the Internet.

Solution:

The best solution, recommended by the browser manufacturers, is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. You may still proceed to load the web page in your browser, and it should load as a secure connection; although this is not recommended, as it is a potential security risk. Also, when proceeding to load the page, you will not see a solid key or closed lock icon on the bottom of your browser, which normally indicates a secure connection to the web site.

NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR/COMMUNICATOR:
Netscape indicates that you should update your browser if it is older than version 4.06 (August 1998). Newer versions of the browser that do NOT need to be upgrade include: 4.06, 4.07, 4.08, 4.5, 4.51, 4.6, 4.61 and 4.7)

INTERNET EXPLORER:
Microsoft indicates that this problem will effect Internet Explorer version 3.03 for Windows 3.1 and NT 3.51, version 3.xx for Windows 9x and NT 4.0, and version 4.5 for Macintosh. In addition, any Internet Explorer version that has this problem should be upgraded to the newest version available for your Operating System.
